Freedom Writers
In the movie we watched today minority students made a connection between their personal experiences and the Holocaust. What connections were you able to make between your life experiences and the students in the movie and the Holocaust? What connections were you able to make between your cultural (African American) experience and the Holocaust? Your response should be a well constructed essay with a minimum of 5 paragraphs. Be sure to respond to both of the above questions.

From watching the movie the Freedom Writers, I can say that there are numerous connections between the movie and my personal life. The issue addressed in the movie is race and the conflictions stemmed upon it. In different scenes in the movie, people of different ethnicities fought against one another because of their racial differences. It is said that the conflict has no one to blame for its origin but is still a prevalent issue in our society. This conflict, among others in the movie, are issues that not only affect Long Beach, California but the rest of the nation as well.
Crimes are committed all over our nation. Our city possesses one of the highest crime rates in the country. Therefore this means that in no way could my life be exempt from this statistic. On many occasions has my race been an issue. Be it between others socially or in the working world, have minorities fallen susceptible to racism.
In terms of the Holocaust, people who were also oppressed I have to say that the similarities between us are underlying and incontrovertible. Both races have experienced the problems that go along with being oppressed. However, their are some significant differences in the period of oppression. One difference would be the time span in which each event occurred. For example, the Holocaust lasted only for nearly a decade. On the other hand, there was slavery that ventured onward in time for over 400 years.
Despite the significant difference, a more drastic comparison would be the homicides and foul play between the two. African Americans lost approximately 100 million over the accumulative count of fatalities. While this number is indeed high, the time span in which it occurs is considerable and one can only wonder the reason behind the staggering number. The Holocaust, which affected Jews, however, had nearly wiped out Jews in their entirety. There were also differences between the treatment of the two people.
Caucasians sought to use African Americans as a means for profit. In terms of the Holocaust, the Nazi Regime often killed Jews on site and did not require them for labor. So it was common that when captured and sent to a concentration camp, they were being sentenced to death. To that extent, it is apparent that Jews were in a worst predicament then African Americans.
